Counting My Blessings

Seph Schlueter has a song called "Counting My Blessings" and it is all I have been able to think about lately. After we had WW3 in our home, God has been urging me to slow down and take my time to focus on the good things that are happening in our lives, instead of looking into the challenges we are in the middle of facing.

It is amazing how easy we can lose sight of God and His blessings. We can become completely lost in our own world and focus so much on what we DON'T have, to where we end up missing out on what we DO have.

We get distracted by anything and everything and we end up finding ourselves murmuring and complaining and asking God "I want," or "I need," or "why can't this happen for me" prayers. Maybe, instead of getting distracted by our "don'ts" or "wants," we should be thanking Him for the things He has already done for us and the blessings that He has already given us.

In the book of James he writes: " My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:2-4)." He goes on to say that if you lack wisdom to ask God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach. So what does this have to do with counting my blessings? The answer is EVERYTHING, of course!

When you focus your sight, mind, heart, and soul on God, you lose sight of the world around you. You start counting your blessings and you find joy in it all, whether that be you going through a trial, or not. You look at the good things in your life and the things that you DO have instead of the things that you DON'T have. Your murmuring and complaining go away and your prayers switch from "I want" to "thank you for what you have done for me."

When this happens, you can ask God for anything! Wisdom to make a right decision, clarification on which road to take, patience in the trials, and whatever else your heart desires. You start coming to God boldly, and looking to Him as your provider and sustainer, instead of a "big, scary, guy on the throne" type of God. You find a new part of him, a loving father who wants to spoil His child, and you are able to surrender all your worries and anxieties to Him.

You can, and will, find yourself becoming perfected in Him. You find out that He will give you all your needs and most of your wants (your extra blessings), liberally and without reproach. Then you can start counting: "1, 2, 3... up to infinity" running out of numbers, before you could thank Him for everything.

So, with all this being said, I challenge you today to start looking into the details of your lives. I challenge you to find more of the goodness in Him and to focus on the things you DO have, instead of the things that you are "lacking." Then, I would like you to start counting them, one by one, until you can't count any higher or until you only see our good and gracious God in them. May God bless you and keep you and may His face shine upon you!
